12.03.09 - Port invests EUR 4 million in Skandinavienkai Expansion

The board of directors and shareholders of the Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft mbH (LHG) have set the course for the future development of the port. They have decided to invest EUR 4 million in the expansion of trailer areas at the Skandinavienkai. Once the board had given the go-ahead for the measure, the shareholders of the Hanse city of Lübeck and of  Rreef Pan-European Infrastructure Two Lux S.ár.l  also approved the investment. Construction will begin this year and is due for completion early in 2010.

LHG Board Chairman Björn Engholm said “It is precisely in difficult economic times like these that the LHG has to be able to offer the best conditions for its cargo handling. This investment shows that the new shareholding structure of the LHG is working. Both the city and Rreef jointly support the future capability of the port.

The expansion work, on slots close to the water at the former Nordgate terminal, will be carried out by the Lübeck Port Authority (LPA) and refinanced by the LHG. About EUR 1.6 million in promotional aid for the project is also coming from the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein.

Prior to the re-development of the SkandinavienKai and the opening of the Südgate, the site running parallel to the former Travemünde K20 country road was used as a so-called preliminary storage area. Because of the poor constructional condition of the site, only about 200 trailers can currently be handled there. After the redevelopment of the four hectare site it will be possible to park 350 trailers in an area close to the berths. Clearly structured parking will mean improved movements. Closeness to the ships and the shorter distances for swap bodies will also save operating time and costs.
